Hence, students seeking admission to a specific medical
college need to prepare themselves according to the standards
of that college.
Not all schools have a common standard. At times the
variation in standards can be quite staggering and dejecting as
well. This kind of a variation in medical school acceptance
standards can make the task of keeping up with them even more
difficult. In such a case, advisors of pre med schools can
guide you about their medical school requirements.
Most medical colleges require you to appear in Medical
College Admission Test (MCAT). MCAT score analyzes your
knowledge of basic sciences, writing and reading abilities and
problem solving skills. Performance at undergraduate courses,
Grade Point Average (GPA), MCAT score affects the chances of
your acceptance at different medical colleges. Volunteer work
experience, letters of recommendation from faculty members and
extracurricular activities record also affect your medical
college acceptance.
Most medical schools expect that you have successfully
completed a standard course work made up of subjects like
mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics and English. However,
your undergraduate knowledge about subject like humanities and
social sciences also pays during the interview.
Medical schools arrange admission interview as the final
admission procedure. Acceptance letters are sent to selected
candidates within 4 weeks after interview. Some schools even
take several months to inform the applicants about their
decisions. In most of the cases you are given 15 days from the
day of receiving the acceptance information to make necessary
deposit and to confirm your interest.
After receiving your deposit, medical school reserve a place
in incoming class. Most allopathic schools demand the deposits
around $100. Osteopathic (DO) schools demand the deposits
around $500 and $1,000. In most of the cases the deposits are
non-refundable.
To know more about the admission procedure of various
medical colleges, you should consult the journal Medical School
Admission Requirements (MSAR). MSAR is published by American
Medical Colleges Association and provides specific admission
requirements of each U.S. or Canadian medical school.
Rejections from some medical colleges are normal. If you
didn't receive acceptance letters from medical colleges to
which you applied, don't slip into a state of despair. This may
happen due to a particular person whom you faced during the
interview.
In such a case, you can try selecting some international
medical colleges. These medical colleges have different
admission dates and education calendar. Hence, you can apply
for admission in these colleges after awaiting the response
from medical colleges you had applied to earlier. International
medical school acceptance criteria is different. Most of these
don't pay much attention to your MCAT or GPA score and hence,
you can pursue your chosen course quite easily.
